Ingredients

For 6 servings, gather these simple items:

  • 500 grams lean ground beef or turkey
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper (capsicum), diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 medium carrots, grated
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (400 grams) tomato sauce or puree
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar or honey
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 6 whole-wheat burger buns, toasted
  • Optional: chopped fresh coriander or parsley for garnish

Direction

  • Cook these tasty joes with these steps:
  • Step 1: Heat a large skillet over medium heat (no oil needed for lean meat). Add ground beef or turkey and cook 5 to 7 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and no pink remains. Drain excess fat if any.
  • Step 2: Add chopped onion, bell peppers, grated carrots, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook 6 to 8 minutes, stirring often, until vegetables soften.
  • Step 3: Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
  • Step 4: Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens and flavors meld. Add a splash of water if it gets too thick.
  • Step 5: Taste and adjust seasoning—more sugar for sweetness or vinegar for tang.
  • Step 6: Spoon generous amounts of the mixture onto toasted whole-wheat buns. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired. Serve hot and enjoy the messy, delicious bites.
