Quick to make and budget-friendly with Lahore market produce.

Ingredients
For 6 servings, gather these simple items:
- 500 grams lean ground beef or turkey
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper (capsicum), diced
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 2 medium carrots, grated
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (400 grams) tomato sauce or puree
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar or honey
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 6 whole-wheat burger buns, toasted
- Optional: chopped fresh coriander or parsley for garnish
Direction
- Cook these tasty joes with these steps:
- Step 1: Heat a large skillet over medium heat (no oil needed for lean meat). Add ground beef or turkey and cook 5 to 7 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and no pink remains. Drain excess fat if any.
- Step 2: Add chopped onion, bell peppers, grated carrots, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook 6 to 8 minutes, stirring often, until vegetables soften.
- Step 3: Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
- Step 4: Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens and flavors meld. Add a splash of water if it gets too thick.
- Step 5: Taste and adjust seasoning—more sugar for sweetness or vinegar for tang.
- Step 6: Spoon generous amounts of the mixture onto toasted whole-wheat buns. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired. Serve hot and enjoy the messy, delicious bites.
